Declaration by the EU on Presidency elections in Peru

The European Union welcomes the electoral victory of Dr. Alejandro Toledo. The European Union wishes to congratulate the Peruvian people as well as the transitional government of Dr. Valentin Paniagua and the electoral authorities on the efficient and transparent way in which the process was carried out, fully meeting international standards.
The European Union endorses the preliminary report of the European Union - Electoral Observation Mission and welcomes the constructive contributions of the national and international observer missions in Peru.
It is the hope of the European Union that the process of national reconciliation, democratization, and restoration of the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Peru will continue and be further strengthened. The European Union and its member states look forward to cooperating with the newly elected government in these and other areas including the process of economic recovery.
The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and the EFTA countries, members of the European Economic Area align themselves with this declaration.
